I grew up on such a street.
Comments from ERI members and others growing American Liberty Elms

“ We have received and purchased a number of Liberty Elm trees from you, placed them in our golf course nursery to mature for eventual transplanting. We are happy to report that after the first planting reached 10 years, we
transplanted 8 of them on our property. So it is with the happy thought that we wish to add to and replenish our nursery with more of your species.
The Louisville Country Club chose you over consulting and contacting the
National Arboretum in Washington, DC or Glenn Dale, Maryland or Delaware,
Ohio or even Princeton, NJ. ‘Liberty’ is, was and is for us as opposed to ‘Valley
Forge’, ‘New Harmony’, ‘Washington”, Princeton’ or other! Our donations
over the past year are just that- for continuing research. Receiving a number
of small trees from you has simply been a plus, and gave us the opportunity of
creating our own ‘Liberty’ nursery. As you now know, we have just this past
year (December 2001) transplanted those small trees which had matured for 10 years (making them approximately 12+ years old) to our club property. We have 3 more left in the nursery which will be transplanted this November-December.“
(The Louisville Country Club has been the recipient of over 125 trees since 1991)

“I just want to take a moment to tell you of the success that Townscape of Lynnfield has had with your Liberty Elms. During the twelve years of our
existence we have been able to place about 550 street trees around town. Of
these 45 have been Liberty elms. All except eleven of these trees we purchased from the nursery of "Trees For Wakefield." Wakefield had purchased them from you in 1989 or 1990 and brought them along to 1 to 1-1/2" caliper.
Practically without exception these trees have exhibited exceptional and very
strong growth. Not only have the trunks thickened dramatically but the limbs
have responded equally well both up and out. This is most impressive.
About four years ago a Liberty Elm was knocked down by a car with the trunk being 75% severed. We staked it back up and bound the cut. Today the tree thrives and the point of injury cannot be found. Truly remarkable stock. I thought that this information would be of interest to ERI. “

"The Liberty Elms we planted on April 30, 1993, as 1 ft. trees, are 4-5 inch caliper and doing fine. We want to order more."
Tommy Wingreen, National Capitol Commission, Ottawa, Ontario Canada
“In December 2005 I purchased an elm, and 4 small elms were included for the Tree Foundation of Kern. The trees are all flourishing at various locations - a church, courthouse, fire station and school.”
Liz Cunningham, Bakerfield, CA (8/7/08)
Five American Liberty Elms were included in our initial planting, and those trees are thriving. At that time, your organization also donated ten 1" caliper Liberty Elms to us, which we repotted into larger containers and grew out in a nursery lot for a year. This past November of 2006, we planted six of those trees in the second phase of our project. We will be planting the remaining trees this Spring. We are very pleased with how quickly all of the trees have been growing, and feel that they will make a significant visual impact in just a few years. You may find it of interest that although all of the trees are planted along the street, some are in a park, some in private yards, and some in a tree lawn. Distance to the curb therefore varies from 18 inches to 18 feet. It will be interesting to see how the trees develop in different locations, and we will keep you updated. Although we don't have access to GPS coordinates now, we hope to in the future, and we will pass those on when we do. Enclosed please see two photos from our November planting. The Scout is James Carter. Pictured in the other photo are Darrell Rapp, Colleen Sirocca, and Ann Kelton.

“Summit is alive and well thanks in part to your terrific organization. We even have an "Elm Street Association" in town and the members have been supportive of our efforts to rejuvenate the Village Green since Elm street runs right through the middle of the Green.”
